The Plan is Unveiled

Mr. W and I are officially on Team Unexplained Infertility! Go us. So we have a plan to do about three rounds of clo.mid + IUI, three rounds on injects + IUI and then we will move on to IVF. I’m not sure if I can honestly do six rounds of IUI before wanting to move in to IVF, but that will be determined as we go.

I have to go pick up my prescription soon so I have it for Monday. I also go in on Monday for my u/s. I’m going to take it days 4 – 8 (100 mg.). AF left no doubt about this plan as she stormed into town this morning bringing some awesome cramps with her.

I have a prescription for a trigger shot as well. The RE told us we could use OPK if we wanted to. Does anyone have any recommendations on this?

  1. Yay! for a plan. Hopefully, there will be no 6 rounds of IUI for you, because this first one will bring your BFP.
I am doing OPK's just to make sure I don't surge on my own before the follie check u/s. I have had 4 monitored cycles, and 3 of them was with trigger, 1 I surged before the trigger time and had to re-schedule the IUI a day earlier. I think it might be worth doing the OPK's, just in case even if you end up triggering.
My understaniding is, that the trigger will more likely make all the mature or close-to-mature follies ovulate, while if you surge on your own only the dominant follie would ovulate and the smaller mature one might be left behind. Also, if you trigger the IUI timing is easier, bc the HCG shot will make O more predictable (almost always happens in 36 hours) - so no guessing games.
My RE does the IUI 36 hours (~2 days) after a trigger, and within 12-24 hours (~1 day) after a natural LH surge.
Also, (by the RE's suggestion) I don't pick up the HCG shot until the day I need it. This saved me $100 during the cycle when I had the OPK+ before trigger time.
Baby Dust! I will be cheering for your new cycle!!! Yay!

  2. Yay for a plan, Dawn! I really, really hope you only need the first step of it, though! So sorry AF showed. :(

I agree with what Erika said -- whenever I've been worried that I might surge before the trigger, I've used OPKs to make sure it wasn't happening too soon. If nothing else, it just gave me peace of mind that I wasn't missing it. This was especially useful for the cycles with clomid because that made me have really big follies that felt like I was going to O really soon.

For me, the nurse usually has me pick up the trigger prescription the day they do the midcycle u/s. The type I use has two doses in it and lasts 60 days after it is mixed. So, I bring the second dose with me when I'm having my next midcycle u/s.

  3. Yay for a plan! Doesn't it feel good to know what's coming next? I'm sorry AF is treating you badly, though. :( Hopefully she leaves town soon so you can get this show on the road!

I agree with Rebecca: if you think you might surge before the trigger, use OPKs. Personally, I liked the trigger because it made the timing very predictable and I'm a control freak.

Good luck!!! I'll be here cheering for you.

  5. Yay for a plan!!! That's the same plan I had. I liked the trigger shot because it didn't make me second guess if I had Oed. Good luck!
